Should I one large enough to fit over moderate clothing, or should I go the next size larger so it can accommodate full winter gear, but be too big otherwise?
I use a vest over a heavy shirt early in the season when the weather is not too cold. I don’t need a lot of insulation because the exercise helps keep me warm. Later in the season, when the temperature drops, I switch to a heavier coat of khaki duck with a layer or two beneath. That seems to work fine. Both are cut fairly large so I can put layers beneath as needed.
Around here almost every bush and vine has thorns, so if that’s the case where you hunt, be sure your hunting gear is up to the task. Cheap clothing is not a deal if it gets ripped to shreds in half a season.

i live in upstate ny and im new to pheasant hunting and ive been out 3 times with no luck. the area i hunt is stocked with pheasants weekly by the DEC. i ordered a pheasant call that is supposed to make roosters call back when you use it. anyone have any tips on hunting without a dog? any info on calls would be helpful as well. thanks.
Hunting pheasants and rabbits are very similar.
The best way I have found to flush pheasants is to walk brushrows or fencerows (or any other area of cover)…..by walking 10 feet and stopping……walking 10 feet and stopping. Both animals rely on their ability to hide and will stay hidden and motionless if you don’t stop. When you stop, they panic, presumably thinking they have been discovered, and then run/flush.
