When you flush one a few feet from you wait for it to get some distance from you before you fire. Shooting too soon will result in either a miss or a bird damaged so bad its ruined. Make sure you shoulder the shotgun properly for accuracy. Learn the swing, lead and follow through of wing shooting. I agree clays are the way to go to have more success in the field. However clays slow down with distance, birds go faster. You need to adjust for that.
