Just like everybody else said you need practice. Another good way to shoot a pheasant is to not rush your shot. Rushing your shot can make you shoot behind and under your bird. I shoot cheap shells so i can always shoot my first shot early and my second shot usually connects. Get out there and get practicing.
References :
I have been hunting and shooting for years.

Clay pigeon shooting either English sporting or FITASC will give you a different selection of 'birds'

Wood pigeon shooting over decoys are also good for training.

Just remember, mount, swing , lead, keep swinging, fire, keep swinging. Second barrel if needed.
References :
When you flush one a few feet from you wait for it to get some distance from you before you fire. Shooting too soon will result in either a miss or a bird damaged so bad its ruined. Make sure you shoulder the shotgun properly for accuracy. Learn the swing, lead and follow through of wing shooting. I agree clays are the way to go to have more success in the field. However clays slow down with distance, birds go faster. You need to adjust for that.
Here is a link to help you;
http://www.sportinggun.co.uk/instruction/430350/TOP_TIPS_How_to_shoot_a_high_bird.html
Study the photos to learn the proper methods of wing shooting.
Also make sure the stock fits you. This is VERY important. If it doesn’t fit right it will greatly hinder you.
References :
The first dude is giving you shit, and kim doesn't need to be in the hunting category, just had to get that out. Now for shooting, im with the guy before me said practice on some clay pigeons first. Make sure your not getting the same throw every time. Once you get the feel for were your shot is going it'll start coming naturally. Depending on the path and distance of the target your going to want to be ahead of it about 2". You gotta lead it. After some practice you'll know how far ahead to aim. Make sure you stay in line if your walking a field or you could get yourself in some trouble. Make sure you have a clear shot and take a sec (only a sec) to get aimed in and pull the trigger. Have fun!
References :
I live in texas, nough' said.

Make sure your shot gun has the proper choke and aim slightly above and just in front of where ever the bird is flying. It's best to practice with 'clay pigeons' a small disk that is propelled in the air for target practice.
References :
Been hunting for 20 years.
