The best pheasant, quail and chukar hunting in Texas

Going pheasant hunting for the first time and need some advice?

Ok so – ive never hunted before and i am going on Wednesday for pheasant with my dad. my dad will just be walking with me. Ive only shot a few times before. We have a bird dog he kinda well trained but hes never been brought hunting before. Should we bring our dog – im scared he will jump and i will shoot him

By the time you react to the bird flying up, he’ll be well above your dog. Pheasant Hunting is the most exciting hunting there is, but whithout a dog, it’s mostly just hiking with a shotgun.

usually your dog with get on point and then the bird will fly straight up and if you are fast enough you can shoot the bird before he gets to high or far away

make sure he stays behind you when you shoot. it would be better for him to go after the birds than you. just incase some more come up. have fun!

spend more time around the dog with a gun and bring him out to shoot clay pigions. now on pheasents they fly in more than one direction so be prepared. i think grouse would be best for you or squirrels not pheasents they are a hard to hit bird. i suggest a 16 gauge with number 6 shot but a 20 or 12 works just as well with same shot size. practice with clay pigions beforegoing hunting flying targets are hard so its best to practice

Please please please do not take the advice of Forrest K (gump more like). So you’ve only shot a few times and he’s suggesting a 16g? A 16g is a pro gun, way to boost your confidence. For the record Pheasant are not to hard to hit. bagged 65 this year.

As one guy has said you need to work with your dog. If he’s never heard gun fire before he may well become gun shy at the sound of the first shot and this may ruin him. Spending time at the clay pigeon range is a good way of training a dog to gun fire.

Leave the dog at home for a while. Go out with your dad, get him to beat for you when the bird gets up swing through keep the gun moving and squeeze the trigger. Remember lead the bird and keep the gun moving.

    Use a 12g or 20g either 5 or 6 shot.

    Good luck.
