I used and improved for early season birds and thick brush hunting but for open area's as said go with the modified choke!
References :
In the case of Pheasant hunting Modified choke is always best to use.. Phesants can be tough to bring down sometimes, and a Modified choke will provide a dense enough pattern to bring them down consistently and not spoil any meat.
References :
Gunsmith/Gun Shop Owner-Dealer

If you are using a pump or semi-automatic, I believe Modified would be a better choice.

If you are using a double gun, having barrels choked Modified and Full would allow you to handle both the near flushes, and the longer range shots.

With an Improved Cylinder, you won't have a tight enough shot spread for the longer ranges, i.e. beyond 20-25 yards.
