The best pheasant, quail and chukar hunting in Texas

will over/under shotguns work well for pheasant hunting?

i got an over/under shotgun and was going to use it for Pheasant Hunting this upcoming season. will they gun work well?

Just as good as any other shotgun. Do you know the advantage of having a O/U Shotgun? There are a few but the biggest is it allows you to have 2 chokes in one gun. One for the close shot and the other for the far shot when you miss the first time. It will work great.

Yes, the gun will work quite well.

Now, you will only have 2 shots, but then by the time you have missed twice, the bird is getting further and further away, so a third shot is rarely of any importance, and even more rarely of any effect.

Many people feel a double barrel over-under with a 26 or 28 inch barrel swing the best, that is why they are still so popular, in the field or shooting trap, skeet, and the like.

The one hinderance is out in the field you aren’t standing in one place like trap and skeet shooters, you are walking around. Double barreled guns are often heavier than their pump or auto counterparts. They can really get to be a drag after hoofing it across the fields and gullies for 9-10 hours

A O/U is a good type of gun for most shooting. With both barrel on the same plan it make the second shot easier and you do not have to jack the second bullet in. If you need more that 2 shot, well practice a lot of reloading it. Usually a O/U is a better made shot gun. You did not say what Gage it was, a 12 or 16 would be nice, a 20 would be reaching. and use the full chocked barrel for far shots and the Mod. barrel for mid and close shots. Please practice all safe gun handling rules, the live you save might be mine. Make sure of you shot before you pull the trigger Remember it is all ways the empty gun that kills some one. Safe hunting

NO unfortunatly over the last 35 years of advanced field studies funded and backed by the rockefeller foundation. I have come to the conclusion that an O/U shot gun in NOT a good weapon for Pheasant hunting. My research has shown that over the vears the Pheasants have adapted a technique to not only survive the shotgun blast they also at the same
time render the said shotgun inopperable.
This is done by the Pheasants learned abillity to stuff the barrels of the shotguns with their long feathers, thereby causing a stoppage in the said barrels and causing the said barrels to mushroom back almost in a "PEELED BANNA" look. On occasions the shooter also has recieved power burns to his face…

    ** EDITORS NOTE******
It is now believed that these New smarter pheasants learned these new skills from watching old Elmer Fud and Bugs Bunny shows.
Just goes to show that Mr. DARWIN was correct.

Absolutely!! They are great guns. If you are a good hunter and a good wingshot, an over and under, or as an old friend of mine insisted on calling it an "up and over", will put the birds in your bag quite well.

Firstly let me point out I’m, English posting on the USA site.

An Over & Under will be suitable for pheasant shooting however I find a side by side presents it’s self better on a formal driven day.

I understand my colonial cousins prefer a semi or dare I say a pump but for us Brits thats just not sport.

Absolutely it would. I recommend firing the lower barrel first because the rise from the lower barrel to the vent rib will give you a good buffer to lead the bird as it is coming up.
